The unpaved cross-island road located near the 15 mile marker on South Beach, known as Yarborough Pass, is now once again open to public use. Conditions on the road are still very rough. Four–wheel drive and high clearance vehicles are recommended.

Description: Yarborough Pass is located in the Laguna Madre, 15.5 miles south of the visitor center. To find the campground, drive to the 15-mile marker and backtrack approximately 100 yards. Look for a notch in the foredune ridge and turn right.

Yes, beach camping both with an RV, tent or car camping is allowed. Malaquite Beach also has an RV area for overnight and tent camping in easy walking distance to the beach. While North Padre Island is picturesque, it’s more of an urban vacation spot than a tropical one. North Padre Island is not as pedestrian friendly as South Padre Island. Visitors to South Padre Island regularly opt to leave their cars at home and walk, bike, or ride the Free Island Metro to get around.

South Padre Island is a popular spring break destination; unless you’re looking to join the party, avoid this area in March. Other times of the year, however, South Padre is generally a safe and quiet vacation destination.
Is Corpus Christi or South Padre Island better?
Some tips: South Padre Island IS the best of the two. It has better beaches, better accomodations, better restuarants and, in my opinion, friendlier people. However, I love both towns! Corpus is closer to the major cities and more things to do, but SPI….it’s just in the smack middle of nowhere.
