How accurate is MaxMind?
MaxMind tests the accuracy of the GeoIP2 and GeoIP Legacy Databases on a periodic basis. In our recent tests, the downloadable databases were 99.8% accurate on a country level, 80% accurate on a state level in the US, and 68% accurate for cities in the US within a 50 kilometer radius.
Is GeoIP Lite free?
GeoLite2 databases are free IP geolocation databases comparable to, but less accurate than, MaxMind’s GeoIP2 databases . The GeoLite2 Country, City, and ASN databases are updated weekly, every Tuesday.
How do I find my MaxMind license key?
Generating a License Key Once you have a MaxMind account, you may generate a license key. First log in and navigate to ‘Manage License Keys’ underneath ‘Account’ on the left-hand navigation menu. Where does MaxMind get its data?
In part, the information in these databases comes from other public databases, such as RIPE and in part from MAXMIND’s internal processing/matching. You can write your own tools to parse RIPE database, extract all of the fields and build your own database if you want, or you can pay someone who has already done it.

In order to download the databases from a script or program, please use the permalinks found on the GeoIP download page .
- In the “Download Links” column, click “Get Permalink(s)” for the desired database.
- Copy the permalink(s) provided in the modal window.
- Replace YOUR_LICENSE_KEY with your license key .
What is a MaxMind license key?
You can create additional license keys to authorize access to the MaxMind products and services you use. You can use this feature to manage authorization access for multiple user groups or to replace license keys you suspect to be compromised.
