What should your platelets be?
A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. Having more than 450,000 platelets is a condition called thrombocytosis; having less than 150,000 is known as thrombocytopenia. You get your platelet number from a routine blood test called a complete blood count (CBC).
What is MLT disease?
Multifocal lymphangioendotheliomatosis with thrombocytopenia (MLT) Multifocal lymphangioendotheliomatosis with thrombocytopenia is a rare blood vessel disorder. People with MLT have multiple skin, stomach and intestinal lesions. Some people have as few as five lesions, but some people have hundreds of them.
How to evaluate anemia?
To diagnose anemia, your doctor is likely to ask you about your medical and family history, perform a physical exam, and run the following tests:
- Complete blood count (CBC). A CBC is used to count the number of blood cells in a sample of your blood.
- A test to determine the size and shape of your red blood cells.
What do platelets do in your body?
Platelets (thrombocytes) are colorless blood cells that help blood clot. Platelets stop bleeding by clumping and forming plugs in blood vessel injuries. Thrombocytopenia might occur as a result of a bone marrow disorder such as leukemia or an immune system problem.
What is critical platelet count?
A platelet count of less than 150,000 platelets per microliter is lower than normal. If your blood platelet count falls below normal, you have thrombocytopenia. However, the risk for serious bleeding doesn’t occur until the count becomes very low—less than 10,000 or 20,000 platelets per microliter.
What blood tests show if you are anemic?
Often, the first test used to diagnose anemia is a complete blood count (CBC). The CBC measures many parts of your blood. The test checks your hemoglobin and hematocrit (hee-MAT-oh-crit) levels. Hemoglobin is the iron-rich protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the body.
How does a CBC detect anemia?
A complete blood count measures hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Hemoglobin of less than 13 grams per deciliter (g/dl) for men and less than 12 g/dl for women is diagnostic of anemia. In iron-deficiency anemia, red blood cells will be small in size with an MCV of less than 80 femtoliters (fL).
What happens if platelets are high?
A high platelet count can cause blood clots to develop spontaneously. Normally, your blood begins to clot to prevent a massive loss of blood after an injury. In people with primary thrombocythemia, however, blood clots can form suddenly and for no apparent reason. Abnormal blood clotting can be dangerous.
Is high platelet count bad?
Normally, a high platelet count doesn’t cause any symptoms. However, it can sometimes cause blood clots. These blood clots can, in turn, cause [48]: Discomfort in the neck, jaw, or arms.
