Is placement testing required?
Almost all two-year colleges and many public four-year colleges require new students to take at least one placement test when they first get to campus. Some private four-year colleges also use these tests. Colleges use placement tests to check the academic skill levels of entering students.
What is on the UMBC math placement test?
The ALEKS PPL Math Placement Test covers topics in numerical operations, algebraic operations, geometry, and trigonometry. It is a 30 question adaptive test designed to accurately assess your current Math ability and to determine which Math course should be your first Math course at UMBC.
Can you retake the math placement test?
After your first baseline, you may take up to 2 Placement Assessments retakes. You must wait 48 hours between Placement Assessments. There is generally no benefit to re-taking the Placement Assessment immediately after completing a prior attempt.

Can you fail a placement test for college?
You cannot fail a placement test. The test determines what courses you will be placed in when you begin at college. Depending on your score, you may need to take extra developmental courses or you may be able to start regular college courses right away.
What happens if you fail the math placement test?
If you fail your placement test, you have not demonstrated the competencies for higher-level math, so you will have to take remedial math. That could make it longer for you to graduate, but I don’t know your program, so I can’t recommend anything. Take the remedial math class offered at most community colleges.
What happens if you fail a class at UMBC?
If a final course grade is not submitted by the May 27th grade submission deadline, an automatic one semester extension of the Incomplete will be granted to the end of Fall 2020. Students will have until the end of the Fall 2020 semester to resolve any remaining coursework.

What happens if I do bad on a college placement test?
Most college placement exams are not pass or fail. They are a snapshot of your level of knowledge in certain areas. If you don’t do well the first time, there is room to improve by retaking most exams. Often, a student can retake the test and score significantly higher.
