What is UAT radio?

What is UAT radio?

UAT is short for Universal Access Tranceiver and is transmit at 978 MHz. Like ADS-B it is used to keep track of aircraft, however UAT is only available in the USA and only for aircraft that fly below 18,000ft. It is a little cheaper and unlike ADS-B, UAT transmissions can also contain weather and traffic data.

Does SDRuno work with RTL-SDR?

SDRuno is the official software for the SDRplay RSP line of receivers, and the beta can be downloaded from their website (note the plugin will not work for the RTL-SDR).

What UAT 978?

To alleviate congestion on the 1090 MHz band, the FAA created another option for ADS-B solutions that run on a dedicated 978 MHz band – Universal Access Transceiver, or UAT. 978 UAT radios can be configured to provide both ADS-B “Out” and “In” capability in a single product.

Who invented SDR?

The Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a design paradigm for wireless communications devices. Its creator, Joseph Mitola, defined the term in the early90s as an identifier of a class of radios that could be reprogrammed and reconfigured through software[12].

What is Airspy?

Airspy is a line of Popular Software-Defined Radio (SDR) receivers developed to achieve High Performance and Affordable Price using innovative combinations of DSP and RF techniques.

What is SDRuno?

SDRuno is an advanced Software Defined Radio application platform which is optimized for use with SDRplay range of Radio Spectrum Processing receivers. This means that the specific features of a particular SDRplay RSP receiver model are enabled automatically within SDRuno.

What band is 1090 MHz?

TCAS operates at 1030 and 1090 MHz and is independent of any ground system. The use of the 960-1164 MHz band for the AM(R)S is reserved on a worldwide basis for operation and development of airborne electronic aids to air navigation and any directly ground-based facilities.

Is the AirNav RadarBox 978 MHz rtl-sdr specialized UAT specialized?

Over on Amazon we’ve recently seen the release of a 978 MHz UAT specialty RTL-SDR and 978 MHz tuned antenna by the flight tracking service known as AirNav RadarBox. The RTL-SDR appears to be similar to their 1090 MHz RTL-SDR version, which contains a SAW filter and LNA onboard the RTL-SDR.

Can I receive UAT aircraft on 978 MHz?

If you are interested in adding the capability to receive UAT aircraft on 978 Mhz, here is some information. This will be primarily of use only in the United States, and even then you will usually not see much traffic unless you are close to a General Aviation (GA) Airport.

What is the stratux ADS-B/UAT diplexer?

Recently the company Stratux released a new ADS-B/UAT diplexer PCB. This is useful if you have a single antenna and want to feed two RTL-SDR dongles, with one receiving 1090 MHZ ADS-B and the second receiving 978 MHz UAT. The filter consists of a splitter and two SAW filters.

Can I receive FIS-B weather information on rtl-sdr?

Now it is possible to use an RTL-SDR to receive the FIS-B weather information that is transmitted on the 978 MHz UAT frequency which is available only in the USA. UAT stands for Universal Access Transmitter and is similar to ADS-B transmitted at 1090 MHz, however UAT has some extra features for pilots compared to ADS-B.
