How do you qualify for Te Kura?
Who can enrol?
- are from families who are geographically remote or itinerant, or living overseas.
- have been bullied, alienated or excluded/expelled from their face-to-face school.
- have been referred to Te Kura by the Ministry of Education due to psychological or psycho-social needs.
Is Te Kura free?
Enrolment with Te Kura is free if you meet the Ministry of Education’s eligibility criteria. Young adults aged 16 to 19 (and not turning 20 in the year of enrolment) who are not enrolled at another school full-time can enrol with us for free too.
What is Te Kura summer school?
Te Kura Summer School is a learning programme available for eligible ākonga (students) who require up to 12 NCEA credits to progress to further study, training, or employment. Te Kura Summer School runs from 20 December 2021 to 11 February 2022. A New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or verified domestic student.
How do I start homeschooling in NZ?
In order to home educate, you must apply to the Ministry of Education for an ‘exemption from enrolment at a registered school’ for each child. The Ministry will then assess your application to see if it meets the legal requirements that your child will be “taught as regularly and as well as in a registered school”.

What happens if I don’t get UE?
The University is offering school leavers who missed out on UE the chance to apply for Provisional Admission (PA) starting in Trimester 1 2021, so long as they meet certain criteria. They will be provided with wraparound support to raise their capability to University standards and help them succeed in their studies.
Can you get UE through Te Kura?
Any remaining credits from level 3 or higher to gain NCEA Level 3 can come from any field, subfield or domain. This means credits from unit standards based subjects, such as Level 3 Legal Studies, will contribute to UE through this requirement.
Is it legal to homeschool in NZ?
Home education is legal as long as home educators file a statement of intent with the Ministry of Education in order to obtain a Certificate of Exemption from the compulsory attendance law.
