What is a valgus heel?
If you have rheumatoid arthritis it’s fairly common for your heel to drift outwards. This is known as valgus heel. It may not cause any problems if it doesn’t drift too far, but it can be troublesome if your arch flattens as a result. Early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis may slow the development of valgus heel.
What is valgus of the foot?
Ankle valgus is an insidious deformity that results in pronation of the foot and medial malleolar prominence. The causes are varied and include neuromuscular disorders, skeletal dysplasia, and clubfoot.
How do you fix a valgus foot?
Most hallux valgus surgeries consist of several of the following procedures:
- Repositioning the bone (osteotomy): This straightens the foot ray.
- Soft tissue correction (lateral release): A rigid misalignment can be straightened by correcting the joint capsule.

Is heel valgus a foot deformity?
There has been emphasised the varus forefoot is commoner than generally supposed, but the deformity may not be recognised unless the foot is correctly examined with the heel held square. Once weight is on the foot the obvious deformity is the valgus heel.
How do you treat an ankle valgus?
No medical treatment is effective and the only option is surgical correction of the deformity. Two main options are available: supramalleolar osteotomy and medial malleolar epiphysiodesis. We report our experience with epiphysiodesis using a transphyseal medial malleolar screw.
What is varus heel?
Forefoot varus is the angling or inverted position of the bones in the front of the foot relative to the heel. In an uncompensated forefoot varus deformity, this causes the bones on the inside edge of the foot to sit higher off the ground than the outside of the foot when standing.
Is valgus normal?
Clinical Notes. Genu valgus develops as a normal variation in some toddlers and in most resolves by 5 or 6 years of age, although it can persist until 8 years. Genu valgus may also be seen in early adolescence, when it is thought to be a result of rapid growth.
Is hallux valgus the same as a bunion?
A condition in which the big toe deviates from the normal position and angles inward toward the second toe is referred to as hallux valgus. Technically speaking, the word bunion refers specifically to an enlarged bump made of bone and sometimes including an inflamed bursa.
