Yes, a sponge filter helps to clean your aquarium, but it’s essentially like a trash can that collects waste and needs to be emptied out every once in a while. We recommend cleaning your sponge filter once a month or whenever you see a decrease in bubbles (which is caused by the foam getting clogged up with detritus).

I like to put my hardscape around the sponge filters. Island scapes are usually what I do. Plants are also useful to try and hide the sponge filters.
What is a mattenfilter technology?
The Mattenfilter technology is based on open-cell (reticulated) foam of 38 to 75 mm (1.5-3.0 inch depending on tank size) thick with a porosity of between 20 and 45 PPI (pores per inch). The foam is cut to fit snugly across the end or back of the tank and tall enough to be above the water level when the tank is full.
